Thank you for your comment. I am not one for following the leader blindly. As I mentioned to Shelly, I am fully aware that when you publish content, your subject may eventually read your opinions and I am prepared to stand by those opinions if he chooses to challenge me. A scary thought. But I do believe that ideas need to be challenged, or how are we to grow our grey-matter?

Yes, I did follow Prensky on Twitter. You always have to be aware that when you publish content, the subject of your ire may eventually read your opinions. Though I am prepared to stand by them if he chooses to challenge me. I guess I was brought up to question everything, while still taking in elements that fit within my values and pedagogies. If anything I must agree the Marc Prensky has succeeded in rocking a rather stagnant educational system and good on him.

I also see the benefit of VLE like second life. Again the learner is able to create the content, and interact with other learners. It is about breaking down those boundaries of communication and allowing learners to make cognitive connections outside their non-digital world.

can I add a 'written-only comment? :-)

I saw Marc Prensky talk for the first time at Cardiff, and I admit I was knocked out by his style. It seemed so sensible to talk about engaging students through the technology and media that they use effortlessly.

However, I remember thinking at the time that some of his more extreme observations seem to do a grave injustice to the ability of learners to be cognitive in a way which was more basic? natural? (not sure what is the best word to use in the circumstances).

Thank you for voicing the doubts that I had. I wish you well, although I doubt Marc will be inviting you for a conference drink any time soon! :-)

I think one of the incredible learning moments for educators is when they disagree with a well-known theorist. This causes self-reflection and validity of educational beliefs! For me, I was enraged by Alfie Kohn. However, later I applied some of his theory and it improved my teaching. I was able to also contact him on Twitter and he read my post and DM'd me. He's a very cool guy! Maybe Prensky will do the same since he is on Twitter!

This may not be your case at all, because I am not so much an advocate for educational games especially after reading from another post how most do not promote higher order skills. I do believe, though, VLE like on Second Life has yet to be fully explored and integrated. I will have to read Prensky's article after this post!
